We are looking for a candidate (m/f/d) based in our Vienna office for the following vacancy:

(Senior) Associate Renewable Energy and Climate Change Projects & Finance (m/f/d)

The role is in our Legal 500 and Chambers highly recommended Energy Team being part of our Finance, Projects and Restructuring practice group.

The Energy Team advises conventional and renewable energy producers, traders, transmission and storage operators and energy intensive customers on energy contracts, project and trade finance and regulatory matters. Transactions of the Energy Team in the Vienna office have strong cross-border context, in particular with Germany, the United Kingdom, Central and Eastern Europe and the Energy Community countries.

The Energy Team is culturally and professionally diverse and includes Team members with Austrian, German, English, Irish, New York and Energy Community member country legal qualifications.

Successful candidates (m/f/d) will enjoy a uniquely dynamic range of international work across a variety of energy and infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities in the Energy Team include support in the following, but not be limited to:

  • Advising on EU and Energy Community energy law and regulatory aspects
  • Drafting energy trading standard (e.g. EFET, ISDA) and bespoke documentation for coal, oil, gas, electricity, renewable energy certificates (e.g. GoOs, IRECS) or carbon offsets
  • Advising countries and international donors on creating renewable energy or capacity market support schemes and the implementation of tendering rounds
  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating renewable and conventional energy finance documents on project finance transactions, including security documents, direct agreements, legal opinions, corporate approval and other ancillary documents, and (depending on experience) intercreditor, hedging and loan facility documents
  • Advising on conventional oil and gas licensing rounds including Joint Operating Agreements, Production Sharing Contracts, Lifting Agreements, Gas Transportation Agreements, Gas Sales Agreements, Gas Transportation Agreement
  • Advising on legal aspects of emerging technologies and products including hydrogen, synthetic fuels, biogas, bioethanol and similar
  • Advising on financial services and energy market regulatory aspects, including REMIT, EMIR, MAR
  • Supporting knowledge management by drafting precedent documents and other knowhow materials
  • Supporting business development activities, including supporting the production of pitch documents

The role would suit someone who has already gained experience in the area of energy regulatory, energy trading, or energy project or finance work and has a keen interest in the energy sector and its technicalities.

The ideal candidate (m/f/d) will:

  • Have a degree in law and in case of applying for a senior associate role have a right to practice from a common law jurisdiction, a CEE or Energy Community Country, or from Austria or Germany
  • Have excellent command of English and be capable of working on the basis of English as the language of instruction, communication and advice
  • Have experience and technical skills in energy project and finance, energy trading or energy regulatory areas
  • Have experience of multi-jurisdictional transactions and a keen interest in cross-border work
  • Be able to handle multiple priorities, working to sometimes conflicting timescales in a fast-paced and challenging environment
  • Be capable to work to agreed deadlines, be proactive communicator about work progress and have an 'all hands on deck' mentality in periods of heavy work load
  • Have a commercial and solutions oriented mindset that applies strong technical knowledge to produce innovative solutions to achieve clients' objectives
  • Be fully cognisant of and always be led by the primary objective to provide advice to client in time and on budget
  • Be keen to get involved in business development
  • Be good humored, enthusiastic about and cognizant of working in a culturally diverse team

For an employment in the position as an Associate (m/f/d), the remuneration is from EUR 53,000 gross p.a. (All-in) depending on the respective previous experience, qualification and the role there will be a competitive remuneration package.
